Ostrea Rose Classic Race 2017
Ortwin and I sailed 15 sep to Blankenberge for the Ostrea Rose Classic Race that weekend. After a few minutes underway we lost all cooling water to the engine and sailed against nasty gusts up to Walsoorden where we removed a small fish from the tubing. Then via Terneuzen to Blankenberge where we found a warm welcome from the lovely OGA and the local guys.
The race on Sunday is an extra-friendly event with classic boats and gaffers, and in separate classes Dragons and Ecume de Mer. Much of the race was against a weak wind and a strong tide, and for that we remained a tiny bit off the wind, lengthening our route but trying to get our large topsail to contribute to an extent. In this confrontation Lona proved her upwind capabilities, sailing up to an impressive 35° from the wind.
In a beautiful way all competing boats are rewarded, but winning in the gaff fleet is considered as the top of the bill and got Lona the Gouden Roos and her first crystal cup in her new life.
